On the occasion of Women’s Day, Vidya Venkatesh was honoured by KIMS Hospital, Thane, as one of the Nav Durga women recognised for inspiring contributions to society. She received this recognition for her sustained work in wildlife conservation and her leadership in driving community-based conservation initiatives in India.
As Director of Last Wilderness Foundation, Vidya has played a key role in shaping programmes that focus on human–wildlife coexistence, working closely with forest-dependent communities and government stakeholders. Her journey into conservation is particularly notable, after spending over a decade in the corporate sector, she chose to follow her passion for wildlife and dedicate her career to conservation work on the ground.
Her approach emphasises building trust with communities, creating sustainable livelihood opportunities, and ensuring that conservation efforts are inclusive and participatory. Over the years, she has worked extensively with indigenous and marginalised groups, helping create pathways where conservation and community well-being go hand in hand.
Vidya’s journey also reflects the growing role of women in conservation leadership. Through her work, she has consistently encouraged greater participation of women in field-based conservation, whether through Self-Help Groups, nature guide training, or grassroots programmes, demonstrating that women are not just participants but key drivers of change in conservation landscapes.
While the award recognises her individual contribution, it also represents the collective effort of teams working across landscapes, engaging with communities, building resilience, and protecting India’s natural heritage.
This recognition is a celebration of leadership, perseverance, and the transformative role women play in shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future for conservation.
